LED Grow Lights in the UK have taken a leap! There are lots of reasons to use them!
Firstly, they don't emit much heat! A lot of UK growers actually switch to LED grow lights in summer to prevent heat problems. Since they're cooler, LED lights also reduce extraction costs in summer; your fans don't have to work as hard to keep your grow room cool.
Secondly, they last a long time. Decent LED grow lights cost more to buy, but last up to 10 years. Year on year, these LED grow lights can cost less than some HPS lights.
Thirdly, LED running costs are incredibly low, since they're low wattage. If you want to keep your energy draw low, this makes a big difference. Just make sure if you're lowering your wattage, you use an LED light that has a high PAR output - the Grownorthern Telos 0008 & Telos 0010 LEDs emit at least 2.1umol per Watt! If your HPS light has a lower PAR output than this, you can lower your wattage without sacrificing grow light.
Some LED grow room lights are so advanced you get a spectrum and PAR output comparable to what you get with an HPS grow light. You can get some brilliant results when you grow with LED lights too. Just make sure you pick the right one.

Do LED Grow Lights Work?
It depends on what LEDs you have and how you’re using them. LED grow lights work really well if your output per Watt is high, and your coverage area is right. The Telos 0008 LED has a high output of 1.9 μmol per Watt. In the right size area, it’s a truly awesome light. Just remember it’s a 240W light. You won’t get the same yield from 240W light as you will from a 600W HPS in the same area.
What warranty do you offer?
The Telos 0008 has a 3 year manufacturer’s warranty, but you can expect it to run at 90% efficiency for 85,000 hours. That’s almost 10 years!
What LED Grow Lights do you sell?
At the moment we only sell one LED growing light – the GNTelos 0008 (made by Grownorthern). It’s the first UK LED grow light that lives up to our expectations and is a good price.
How many LED lights do I need?
One Grownorthern Telos 0008 emits 450μmol/s. This is fine over roughly 1 square meter for propagation and vegetative growth. For fruiting and flowering, you’ll need 800-1000μmol/s per square metre, so two of these LED light systems would be the best option.
What’s the difference between LED Lights & HPS Lights?
HPS lights are made up of a ballast, lamp and reflector. They tend to have a much higher output, with the most popular being 600W HPS. LED lights use LED emitters and a driver to power them, often all assembled in a single fixture.
Can you use LED lights for cuttings?
LEDs can be a great choice for vegetative grow rooms. They have a good broad spectrum suitable for both vegetative and flowering growth.
WiIl I get good yields from LED grow lights?
Yes. The technology is now here to enable growers to get yields as good as HPS using LEDs. As long as you get your wattage and hanging heights right.
Are LED lights cheaper to run?
LED grow lights in hydroponics are great if you’re looking to keep running cost down. They’re as efficient (output per Watt) as the best HPS light systems and are available at a lower wattage.
How Long do LED Lights Last?
It depends on the LED light. Some LED lights last longer than others. Telos 0008 & Telos 0010 LED Grow Lights last around 10 years before they need replacing. You won't need to replace any parts during this time, either. This is one of the things that makes LED lights cost-efficient; though LED lights cost more to buy, they cost less overall because they last longer than HPS lights.
Do LED grow lights increase your humidity?
In a way. Your temperature and grow room humidity are closely related. We measure grow room humidity as relative humidity (RH). Your relative humidity tells you how full of water your air is, at a set temperature, as a %.
If it is holding the maximum amount of air, your RH is 100%, if it is holding half the amount of water it could hold, it'd be 50%.
The hotter the air, the more water it holds. Since LED lights are cooler to run, your grow room temperature tends to be lower, which means your relative humidity will be higher.
With a higher relative humidity, less transpiration pressure is put on plants. It's easier for them to retain water in summer. This also means plants can handle a higher nutrient strength in summer when using LED plant lights.
Do LED plant lights make CO2 more usable?
Yes. If you use LED lights, you don't have to extract as much air to keep your grow room cool. This means that CO2 is in contact with plants for longer before being drawn out by extractor fans when using LED grow lights.
