Growing with DWC: A Deep Water Culture Guide
Deep Water Culture (DWC), also known as Bubblers, is one of the most popular hydroponic methods. Plants sit in net pots with roots suspended in a nutrient-rich solution that’s constantly aerated by an air pump and airstone. This environment supercharges nutrient uptake, giving you vigorous growth, huge root systems, and heavy yields.
Fully Establish Plant Roots
Before moving plants into a DWC bucket, make sure roots are well established and clearly poking through starter cubes or blocks. Transplanting too early can cause waterlogging or stalled growth. If conditions are warm and blocks dry out quickly, top-water lightly until roots hit the solution.
Only Use Mineral-Based Nutrients
Avoid organic feeds in DWC. They can clog pumps, reduce oxygen levels, and make water sticky. Always run a clean, mineral-based feed designed for hydro systems — e.g. SHOGUN Samurai Hydro.
Lower Water Levels as Roots Develop
Start with water levels just under the net pot so roots can touch moisture. As roots extend and multiply, gradually lower the water line to expose upper roots to more oxygen, while still keeping plenty submerged for nutrient uptake.
Keep Control of Nutrient Strength
The oxygenated root zone in DWC means weaker feeds are often enough for fast growth. As a guide:
- Vegetative growth: Aim for 0.6–0.8 EC (6–8 CF).
- Flowering: 1.2–1.4 EC (12–14 CF).
Don’t exceed 1.6 EC (16 CF). Regularly check solutions with a Bluelab Truncheon or similar.
Manage Water Temperatures
DWC is most effective when solution temps are steady between 18–21°C. Warmer water reduces dissolved oxygen and can invite pathogens. Many growers use a nutrient chiller or heater to keep conditions stable year-round.
Clean and Sterilise Your System

Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Brown roots: Often a sign of Pythium or low oxygen. Increase aeration and sterilise the tank.

- High water temps: Use a chiller, increase airflow, or insulate reservoirs.
