Transplanting Your Cuttings and Seedlings
Transplanting Your Cuttings and Seedlings
Knowing when and how to transplant your cuttings or seedlings is key to continued healthy growth. Transplanting into hydroponic cubes or soil/coco pots provides plants with a stable base for root expansion and prevents unnecessary stress. Most cuttings will be ready to transplant after 14–28 days, once roots are clearly visible through the propagation cubes or pellets.
Transplanting in Hydroponics
- Pre-soak the transplanting cubes with a weak nutrient solution. Let a bucket of water stand for 24 hours to remove chlorine, then add nutrients such as SHOGUN Samurai Hydro Grow (6ml per litre) and a drop of SuperThrive.
- Check and adjust the pH to between 5.5 and 6.5 using a pH meter. Add pH Down as necessary until you’re within range.
- Soak the transplanting cubes in the prepared solution for a few minutes. Once soaked, gently shake them to remove excess liquid. They should be damp, not waterlogged.
- Insert seedlings into the cubes, adjusting the fit to ensure no gaps remain that could let in light and damage delicate roots.
Transplanting in Soil/Coco
- If using coco, pre-soak the media with dechlorinated water and a suitable feed solution, as coco contains no nutrients.
- For light soils (e.g. Tropic Light Mix), nutrients are already included, making them suitable for the first few weeks. Avoid compacting soil too tightly, as this reduces aeration and root expansion.
- Fill pots by sprinkling in the media and giving a light shake to settle it. Create a hole large enough to hold the propagating cube or pellet securely.
- Place the cutting or seedling into the pot, then water gently until run-off appears. Avoid overwatering – the medium should be moist, not soggy.
Key Tips for Transplanting Success
- Always pre-soak media to prevent nutrient lockout or transplant shock.
- Check pH before planting to ensure roots can access nutrients properly.
- Handle cubes and seedlings carefully to avoid damaging new roots.
- Water in gradually, ensuring an even, moist consistency without oversaturation.
By following these steps, your plants will transition smoothly into their new environment, giving them the strong start they need to thrive in either hydroponic or soil/coco systems.
