Grow lights can be incredibly heavy. It’s important that you have the right tools to lift and secure them in place.

Here at GroWell, we stock a wide range of grow light movers and hangers.

When choosing grow light hangers, remember that you will almost certainly need to adjust your hanging heights. You’ll want to choose a hanger that makes this easy.

Check out the frequently asked questions and our answers below. If you’re unsure what you need, visit your local store or talk to our friendly experts today on 0333 003 22 96.

What are the cheapest grow light hangers to use?

It’s cheapest to hang your grow lights with hooks and chain.

However, in terms of price, there’s not much in it.

For the sake of a couple of quid, you could get a set of Rope Ratchet Hangers or Ezi-Roll Light Hangers. They’re much easier to use and you can be really precise with your hanging heights.

What’s the best grow light hanger to use?

You’re always best off with a set of Exolux Pro Rope Ratchet Heavy Duty Hangers. One hanger will hold 34kg - that’s 68kg per pair. They’re easy to use and you can readjust hanging heights easily.

They’re the only option if you’re using LED's or heavy duty lights.

Where in my tent should I hang my grow lights?

It depends on your tent and the shape of your reflector. Most of the time, you will just need to divide your tent into sections, and hang one grow light in the centre of each section.

If you have an advanced, Gavita two light layout, divide your tent width into 5 sections, then hang each light 1/5th from either end of the tent.

How high should I hang my grow lights?

It depends on the intensity of your lights.

You need to get your lamps as close as possible to your plants for maximum performance, but far enough away that the delicate growing tips of your plant don’t get damaged by excessive heat.

As a rule, here’s how high to hang plant growing lights:

  • 250W HPS grow lights: 30– 40cm from the plant canopy
  • 400W Hydroponic grow lights: 40 – 60cm from the plants
  • 600W HID plant grow lights: 50 - 70cm from plants
  • 750 & 1000W HID indoor grow lights: 75 - 150 cm

If you have an air-cooled reflector, you can bring your lights much closer to your plants but you will distribute the light over a smaller area.

Of course, other factors come into play, so if you’re still unsure, ask us for advice before hanging your growing light.

When might I have to adjust my light hanging heights?

As plants grow, you need to raise your light to maintain a safe distance between your crop and light.

The only exception is Gavita grow lights, which should be secured to the top of your tent and stay there, so that the plants can grow into the intensity.

Some growers also raise their lights when they introduce young plants into their main vegging tent, then slowly lower the light. This gives young plants time to acclimatize to the intensity.

What grow light accessories help combat heat problems?

An obvious one, is the Heat Shield Super Spreader. It’s really great at deflecting heat from underneath your lamp.

Another option is to create airflow between your canopy and light to prevent hot air from building up. This can be done with air movement fans, but the most efficient way is to use a diffusair which hangs just below your light height.

If you have a multi-light layout, grow light movers (like our LightRail) will allow you to remove a grow light without losing coverage. Just attach your remaining grow light to the LightRail to automatically move it across your growing area.

Since your remaining light is constantly moving, heat from that light is more evenly distributed across your growing area so you’re less likely to get pockets of hot air. Bear in mind that if you do this, the loss of a light will mean you lose light intensity.

If heat is an issue, consider using air cooled lights with an air cooled lighting extraction kit.
