What is Hydroponics?

Hydrophonics information & gardening advice without soil

Very simply put, hydroponics is the way of growing plants without soil. No more and no less.

The 'Why' of Hydroponics?

Well, firstly it is a very clean method of plant growth making it highly suitable for indoor growing. Just think no dirt!

You get higher yields. Instead of guessing what your plants need, as you do in soil, you start by growing your plants in an inert (i.e. has no nutritional content) media such as Grodan Rockwool or Clay Pebbles and feed your plants the very best nutrients (i.e. hydroponic plant food) that you can buy. This way you know that your plants are getting exactly what they want when they want it.

You can grow more garden and plants in a given area. Because your plants are not competing for nutrients you can grow more plants in the same space as compared to soil.

Your plants tend to grow faster and therefore you tend to get more yield as a result. They are also healthier making them more resistant to pests and diseases.

You get less waste. It is much quicker, cleaner and easier to clean up after you have finished growing hydroponically than from a grow room with soil in it. There is also a lot less to throw a way. Soil is bulky and dirty whereas in hydroponics your growing media tends to be fairly minimal.

The 'How to' of Plant Growing?

So apart from the many benefits of hydroponics (and there are lots more) how exactly do you grow plants hydroponically? Well, very simply you find a well aerated medium such as Grodan Rockwool, Clay Pebbles, Perlite or NFT (growing in running 'aerated' water) and give your plants all the nutrients they need to grow. In the vegetative growth phase this would be a 'grow' nutrient. And in the flowering and fruiting phase this would be a 'bloom' nutrient. There is a little more to it than that though. You need to make sure the pH of water you feed your plants is at around pH 6. This is done by testing the pH (like you did at school) with either a cheap manual tester or an electronic meter. Next you need to make sure you don't overfeed your plants. In other words when they are young you just feed with a very diluted down nutrient solution and as they progress into the flower and fruit growing stage you increase the strength to match the demands of the plant. (You get instructions with all the plant nutrient packages). We will advise you on the best grow lights, hydroponic systems and kits along each step of the way.

The 'Good Bit'

All of this is very good, but what is best of all is that we have made everything so simple for you. 'Lets not forget soil'

A note on soil. Soil is great and it's been around for a long time. And it's probably here to stay. Plus a great many plant growers love it and wouldn't use anything else. So apart from being experts in hydroponics we are also keen proponents of quality soil products such as the Bio Bizz range from the Netherlands. In fact our soil counters many of the problems commonly associated with soils in that it is blended for optimum growth and drainage. As well it is pest free unlike so many soils commonly found in garden centres. All of this said, you will always get better yields from a like for like garden when growing plants hydroponically as compared with soil. No doubt about it! So while soil is great and we would never knock it - 'hydroponics rocks when it comes to yield.'
