    An Introduction to Irrigation

Putting together an irrigation system offers an easy and automated alternative to hand-watering plants growing in pots. It only requires a small amount of time and effort to assemble the necessary components, and is an investment that will very quickly pay off by freeing you up to do other things – inside the grow room and out. Plants kept under one or more HID light tend to need watering on a regular basis due to the heat output of the lamp(s), often responding most favourably to small and frequent feeds. An irrigation system will comfortably manage this process for you and can comprise of as little as a reservoir tank, a pump, pipework, drippers and a timer. The first article in our series on irrigation talks about how to establish your very own system, starting with a simple example before then reviewing further advanced options.

    A Bug's Life

Although British Summers are notorious for being extremely unpredictable, one constant factor of concern is the barrage of different bugs that will try breaking into your grow room and setting upon plants.

Applying preventative measures against pests – such as thoroughly spraying all areas with Neem Repel and carrying out a 5 day check for insects (scan plants for physical damage as well as the actual pests themselves) helps to establish an effective wall of resistance, but what should you do if they still manage to launch a successful invasion?

First off, don’t panic! Instead take a deep breath, keep calm and use our guide to correctly identify the exact type of bug attempting to devour your crop and the best options for eradicating it.

    Heated Propagator vs Unheated Propagator

When it comes to propagation there are certain goals shared between growers far and wide – these concern germinating as many seeds as possible whilst also minimising the time spent waiting for this to happen. Using a propagator usually helps improve results on both fronts, but there’s a big decision to make – do you go for a heated or unheated model? We put a popular version of each type of propagator to the test, looking at which one performs the best overall. Discover exactly what was done and our findings from the little experiment!

LED Grow Lights Test 2: Rooting Clones

The first LED Grow Light test established that you can use a UFO model to keep plants alive at the most basic level during the vegetative stage. It's now time to investigate whether or not the same light successfully roots cuttings. Whilst plant health will be observed and commented on, the main aim involves the production of roots.

Automating Feeds Using DIY Drip Irrigation Components

Irrigation components. The little bits of black and green plastic that are really useful for various types of grow room set up, if not always in the most entirely obvious of ways. It makes sense then to outline what some of these weird and wonderful pieces do and how they can be combined to create systems capable of improving certain growing related processes. We start by looking at automating the watering of potted plants.

LED Grow Lights Test 1: A small matter of survival

The first in our series of tests on LED grow lights set out to identify whether one of the popular systems could keep several established plants alive and healthy during the vegetative stage. To make it interesting the 90w UFO LED grow light that was used for the trial went up against a similarly efficient 125w blue Eco-Light, inviting comparisons between each unit’s ability to successfully maintain a store bought basil, parsley and chilli plant. Although the test only took place over a two-week period, the results still proved very insightful. Question is; have they paved the way for further studies? Take a look and discover the answer!

LED Grow Lights – Do they actually work?

Evidence. It’s what we all need to see when claims start to circulate regarding something revolutionary, something game-changing, something that on the surface of our understanding sounds far too good to be true! And yet, more often than not, word of mouth can spread like wildfire without actual proof of results ever being present, a facet of modern times largely down to the fast and open nature of the Internet. For most members of the indoor gardening community, the repeated boasts of “superior technology” and “enhanced plant growth” made by manufacturers of LED grow lights certainly seem attractive and plausible. But where are the reports on research and testing, the side-by-side comparisons with existing lamps, the clear, concrete, undeniable evidence? Have a look... we can't find any! Keith sets out to throw light on this issue in a series of articles examining the effects of using various LED units to raise plants at different stages of the life cycle. Join him on his journey!
