Secrets of Successful Propagation: an Early Start and an Exciting Innovation!

In the first week of December our staff at GroWell Sheffield began sowing seeds for the chilli plants that will be taken to various shows and events throughout the year – talk about getting off to an early start! Using grow lights in the greenhouse is key to overcoming the cold conditions, since they increase the total level of light and amount of ‘daylight’ hours. By propagating cuttings and seedlings during winter you can have established plants ready for the beginning of the outdoor season, way ahead of most traditional gardeners! Of course the propagator plays an important role too and we’re excited to announce a new model is coming soon! Check out this latest post for an exclusive preview!

Correctly Incorporating Silicon Into Your Feeds

The response to our ‘Food For Thought’ article on Silicon has been very positive indeed! Many growers commented that they were previously unaware of its ability to strengthen plants – toughening them up against insect attacks, disease and unfavourable environmental factors (e.g. heat) – as well as the improvements that materialise in relation to nutrient uptake, translocation, photosynthesis and yields. Whilst adding the element to the nutrients, boosters and water in your root feed is not difficult, you do need to follow certain guidelines. Find out what happens when you add Silicon correctly... and also what happens when you don't!
