Food For Thought – Primary Macronutrients NPK
After outlining the importance of knowing a little bit about what goes into your plants when you concoct nutrient solutions), the next step is to take a closer look at the impact of certain elements on growth and development. Reviewing the back of bottled nutrients and boosters – which you should always do to get an idea of how to use the product – reveals a list of all the contents, the percentage of each one inside and more often than not the NPK ratio/value. This last point refers to the primary macronutrients Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P) and Potassium (K), needed by plants in larger quantities compared to everything else. Find out how these are used by plants, the effects of undersupply and oversupply and what you can do to ensure your crop stays healthy.

Begin growing indoors now and get a head start for the outdoor season
With the New Year comes the optimism of new beginnings, whereby gardeners of both the indoor and outdoor variety start thinking about their next crop and dreaming of a huge harvest. Although this month often tends to be the one that sees the action return to grow rooms across Britain, it’s not usually until March or April that the same thing happens for those ultimately aiming to produce plants in more traditional gardens, greenhouses and allotments. Our resident expert Keith has set out to show outdoor gardeners the benefits of starting off seedlings earlier than normal and nurturing them indoors for longer than before, the evidence of which will be on display at the chilli festivals we attend during 2013. Read his latest blog entry here!

Enjoying The Fruits Of Your Labour (GroWell Grow Diary)
Harvesting fruit from your indoor garden is without doubt the most satisfying moment in the growing cycle. You’ll certainly find that other aspects are very enjoyable too, like nurturing the young seedlings for example, but finally getting to reap the rewards of a crop is what it’s really all about! After careful consideration of the methods you can use to collect the goods produced – the “all-in-one harvest”, the “two stage harvest” and the “gradual harvest” – our resident expert Keith outlines when and how to apply each technique before explaining what he chose to do with his own twilight chillies.

Extending the vegetative cycle
One of the main benefits of indoor gardening is the complete level of control you are afforded over the growing environment and the associated opportunity to closely manage and finely tailor every aspect of plant development. The vegetative stage of the plant life cycle deserves special attention in terms of the conditions you choose to create, since whatever size your plants end up reaching will largely depend on the work done during this time. To produce massive plants and achieve huge yields, you might want to think about extending the typical vegetative cycle. Read our informative article to find out all the important facts and how-to details!

Saving Plant Genetics Revisited
Recently we took a look at the several different ways that you can save plant genetics and then decided to put them to the test. It all came about following a demonstration on tackling aphid infestations during the fruiting stage, whereby the question was asked; “if things somehow escalated and became worse, what options are available to try and save plant genetics?” Having identified and explained the three main methods of saving plant genetics – overwintering, stratification of seeds and taking late cuttings – let us check up on the trials and examine our results.
