A Lesson In Lamps: Hanging Heights
This is the first article of a two-part series that aims to take a closer look at lamps, considering aspects such as design specifications, maximum achievable coverage of light and tips for usage. Right now though the focus starts with recommended hanging heights of High Intensity Discharge lamps (think SOLAAR, Grolux, Sodium Lamps, Metal Halide Lamps, etc) and Fluorescent Lamps (e.g T5HO Sunblasters and Eco-Lights). Hopefully this should prove to be of use, as it is something that you need to consider throughout an entire crop!

Dual-Room Extraction With One Fan
Sometimes when you’re setting up an indoor garden you may wish to extract from two areas by employing just the one fan. After all it’s quite often a common practice to operate separate vegetation and flowering rooms given that this allows you to maintain a constant flow of cuttings, or perhaps you want to develop two different varieties of plant contained within individual tents. Whatever your reasons happen to be, dual-room extraction with a single fan will help keep purchasing costs down whilst letting you make full use of the capabilities of a modern air moving unit.

LED Grow Lights Test 4: Vegetative Growth
Forget Europe’s win over USA at this year’s Ryder Cup! As far as mighty comebacks go, turning the ugly cuttings that were grown under an old LED light into good-looking plants using nothing but the latest technology would surely rival amongst the most jaw-dropping of achievements! This latest test was almost over before it began due to the condition of the plants but a healthy dose of perseverance, expertise, well-timed changes and plain old luck helped produce somewhat of a minor miracle! Discover how much of a difference the new LED light made when compared against the previous model and a competing 600 Watt HID unit!

LED Grow Lights Test 3: Transplanting and Vegetative Growth
The evidence is there for all to see now. LED Grow Lights can be used to keep store bought plants alive over a number of weeks and will even root cuttings, albeit with questionable results on both fronts! Still, by having established clones from the previous test to hand, an opportunity arose to try and continue growing the plants through the vegetative and flowering stages up until the point of harvest. This time a more powerful LED unit enters the arena, and since it claims to perform to a higher standard than 600 Watt HID lights, we’ve started a side-by-side comparison grow!

LED Grow Lights Test 2: Rooting Clones
The first LED Grow Light test established that you can use a UFO model to keep plants alive at the most basic level during the vegetative stage. It's now time to investigate whether or not the same light successfully roots cuttings. Whilst plant health will be observed and commented on, the main aim involves the production of roots.

Automating Feeds Using DIY Drip Irrigation Components
Irrigation components. The little bits of black and green plastic that are really useful for various types of grow room set up, if not always in the most entirely obvious of ways. It makes sense then to outline what some of these weird and wonderful pieces do and how they can be combined to create systems capable of improving certain growing related processes. We start by looking at automating the watering of potted plants.

LED Grow Lights – Do they actually work?
Evidence. It’s what we all need to see when claims start to circulate regarding something revolutionary, something game-changing, something that on the surface of our understanding sounds far too good to be true! And yet, more often than not, word of mouth can spread like wildfire without actual proof of results ever being present, a facet of modern times largely down to the fast and open nature of the Internet. For most members of the indoor gardening community, the repeated boasts of “superior technology” and “enhanced plant growth” made by manufacturers of LED grow lights certainly seem attractive and plausible. But where are the reports on research and testing, the side-by-side comparisons with existing lamps, the clear, concrete, undeniable evidence? Have a look... we can't find any! Keith sets out to throw light on this issue in a series of articles examining the effects of using various LED units to raise plants at different stages of the life cycle. Join him on his journey!

Keep Your Nutrient Solutions Cool This Summer
It certainly has been a pretty poor summer so far, but you should not take things for granted on the temperature front – UK grow rooms continue to get warmer and warmer by the day. Lifting up the lid of your feed tank to find brown and mushy roots remains an incredibly disheartening and all too frequent heat-related issue at this time of year, with failure to cool the nutrient solution almost always representing the cause. Thankfully a Nutrient Chiller will help keep feeds between the optimum temperature range, significantly boosting oxygen content for a whole host of benefits. Check out our article and see just how easy they are to set up and run!
